Prophet Muhammad is considered to be the last messenger or prophet of God by the members of Islam. His full name was Abū al-Qāsim Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim. He was born in the year 570 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. He is recognized to be the founder of Islam by the Muslims.
Sources of Prophet Muhammad’s life
People can get information about his life from the following sources:
- Quran: Quran is a sacred book of Islam. Though it contains the words and sayings of God told to Muhammad by the messenger of God, it also contains a few sayings and events of Muhammad.
- Sunnah: Sunnah is the record of actions and events in Muhammad’s life. What he did, and how he answered the questions of the people were mentioned in the record known as the Sunnah.
- Hadith: When people had questions in their mind, they always visited MUhammad for sorting out their confusions. After Muhammad died, the people were given answers by the people closest to Muhammad as similar as possible to the answers of Muhammad. These stories and answers were written down and are known as the Hadith.
- People may also learn about Prophet Muhammad through the works and biography of Muhammad written by Ibn Isḥāq, al-Ṭabarī,al-Thaʿālibī, Kitāb al-maghāzī of al-Wāqidī, Kitāb al-ṭabaqāt al-kabīr of Ibn Saʿd.
Different names of Muhammad known to people
People know around 99 names of Muhammad from various sources such as books, sayings of many scholars etc. The most famous name by which Muhammad is known is an-Nâbî,the prophet. Some of the other known names of Muhammad are Ahmad, Abd Allah, Habib Allah, Khairul Bashar, al-Mubashir, ar-Ra’uf, al-Mahi, al-Hanif, al-Fatih, al-Mussafah etc.
In Islam it is important for people to understand the meanings of the names by which Prophet Muhammad is known to deeply understand about Islam.
LIFE OF MUHAMMAD
Prophet Muhammad was born in the year 570 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. He was born to ʿAbd Allāh(father) and Āminah(mother) who belonged to the family of Banū Hāshim, the race who protected its shrine, Ka’bah.
Arab tribes have kept a record of the ancestry line of Muhammad and kept the records secured. His father had died before he was born.
At a very small age he was sent to the desert in order to learn Arabic properly. There he was taken care of by a poor woman named Ḥalīmah. She took care of Muhammad in the desert as her own son. Muhammad’s mother died when he was six years old. Being orphan he was taken in the care of his grandfather and after his death after two years, his uncle named Abu Talib took care of him where he worked as a camel herder for him.
Marriage and kids
He was married to a widow named Khadījah bint Khuwaylid at an age of 25 years. Khadījah bint Khuwaylid was a merchant and with her Muhammad also learnt and grew as a businessman. They had six children named Qāsim, Abd-Allah ibn Muhammad, Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthūm, and Fāṭimah.
After her death, Muhammad married other women.
In total he had seven kids, six(four daughters and two sons) from the first wife and one son from the another one named Maria al-Qibtiyya.
Muhammad went to meditate to the desert and caves. One day at an age of 40 years, he told Khadija that he had a dream in which he met an angel of the God, named Gabriel (Jibril). And this way he regularly saw Gabriel and he told God’s words to Muhammad. This went on for around 23 years and stopped only after Muhammad’s death. All the words and sayings of God passed on by the messenger to Muhammad are written in a sacred book, Quran. This happened at the Jabal al-Nur, known as the mountain of light.
Quran is considered to be the most sacred books of Islam. The preaching of Muhammad can also be found in the Sunnah and Hadith.
He was considered to be the messenger of God or a prophet because of many reasons. It was believed by the people that a person with a black mole on the back is a messenger of God and Muhammad had one. Also he was known to the people by the name la-Amin (the trusted one) because he was very fair with people and had a great sense of justice. It is also believed that Prophet Muhammad had been purified by two angels while he was in the desert.
Due to all these reasons he was taken to Mecca by Halimah and her husband.
Prophet Muhammad is said to die at an age of 62 in the year 632 in Medina. It is said that he died of natural reasons only, he had fever, headache and some infection which were the causes of his death.
